  1. Check for debris that might hinder gameplay. Examine the buttons of your controller for any visible debris, dust, or residue. Sticking buttons can often be caused by foreign materials that can hinder movement.
  2. Clean the controller. Use a can of compressed air to remove loose debris from the controller. You can also use 90% Isopropyl Alcohol and a microfiber cloth to wipe down the controller's exterior to ensure cleanliness.
  3. Restart your Console. If you find your controller completely unresponsive, try to power cycle your console and see if that restores functionality to your controller.

In most instances where your controller is experiencing issues, updating your controller firmware can also resolve many issues.

  1. Connect the controller to the PS5 using a USB cable.
  2. Go to Settings > Accessories > Controller > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
  3. If there is an update available, then you should update. This will resolve temporary issues with your controller's software and help with the responsiveness of your controller's buttons.

If your controller has the latest firmware and is still experiencing an issue, attempt to re-sync your controller with your PlayStation 5 console.

  1. Turn off your PlayStation 5.
  2. Unplug the controller and flip it over.
  3. While it is upside down, locate the recessed reset button in the small hole on the back of the controller, and use your paper clip or similar tool to press and hold it for at least 6 seconds.
  4. Release the reset button and wait a few more seconds. Then, plug in the controller using a 2.0 USB-C cable.
  5. Press the PS button on the front of your controller. When the light bar on the controller turns blue, it should be paired, and you can log on to your PS5.

If you find cleaning the controller's exterior ineffective, there might be a chance that dirt or debris has worked its way into the inside of the controller. If you've spilled a sugary drink onto the DualSense, dried sugar may cause your buttons to stick.

  • Use the button replacement repair guide to clean your controller from the inside.
  • You can deep clean your buttons by removing the affected buttons and washing them with soap and water. If this doesn't work, you may need to replace the buttons.
3

If your controller's buttons are sticking, then there is the possibility that your controller may have been physically damaged. Physical damage could affect the functionality of the buttons. If any of your buttons are damaged, you must replace them.

  • Inspect Each Button: Carefully check each button for physical damage or signs of wear, cracks, or warping. Press each button to see if there's any unusual resistance or crunching.
  • Check Both Thumbsticks: Ensure that the thumbsticks move smoothly without any obstruction. Look for any visible damage or debris around the thumbstick.
  • Check for Additional Damage: Check your controller's motherboard for any signs of burns or other damage that might affect the controller's ability to function correctly.
