We want to make it easy for you to fix your gear, and this includes your household appliances. They aren’t cheap: Americans spend more than $15 billion a year on new appliances. That means fixing your own blender when it refuses to blend or (carefully!) taking apart the back of your busted microwave could save you some cash.
How much cash, exactly? It depends on the make and model of your appliance. Appliances tend to be more durable than trendy electronics, but the average microwave could cost anywhere from $300-$680 to replace. And larger appliances? The average refrigerator can cost upwards of $2000 to replace. With numbers like those, fixing your own household appliances is worth a shot.

$300 for a microwave seems a little steep to me. I can’t say I’ve ever spent more than £80 on one, and that was a really nice brushed metal convection combo model from a name brand.
It is a high number. I believe the average pricetag reported here accounts for built-in microwaves, which range from around $500 to about $2,000.
My microwave oven has been in my family for at least 10 years. If only cell phones lasted that long. How come they don’t?? How come a complicated magnetron food heater lasts longer than a small radio?
