MacBook Pro with Retina Display Teardown

The new MacBook Pro with Retina Display is stunning. 0.71″ thick, super-fast processor, and 95 watt hours of battery life. It crams 5.1 million pixels—that’s one pixel for every resident of Singapore—into a 15.4″ screen.
But even though it packs lots of gee-whiz bells and whistles, we were thoroughly disappointed when we ventured inside. This is, to date, the least repairable laptop we’ve taken apart. Apple has packed all the things we hate into one beautiful little package.
Teardown here.

Teardown highlights (if you can call them that):
- Just like in the iPhone 4/4S (and the MacBook Air), proprietary Pentalobe screws prevent folks from accessing the machine’s internals. That means you need a special screwdriver just to remove the bottom cover.
- As in the MacBook Air, the RAM is soldered to the logic board. Max out at 16GB now, or forever hold your peace—you can’t upgrade.
- The proprietary SSD isn’t upgradeable either (yet), as it is similar but not identical to the one in the Air. It is a separate daughtercard, and we’re hopeful we can offer an upgrade in the near future.
- The lithium-polymer battery is glued rather than screwed into the case, which increases the chances that it’ll break during disassembly. The battery also covers the trackpad cable, which tremendously increases the chance that a user will shear the cable in the battery removal process.
- The display assembly is completely fused, and there’s no glass protecting it. If anything ever fails inside the display, you will need to replace the entire (extremely expensive) assembly.
Repair Score: 1 / 10
Laptops are expensive. It’s critical that consumers have the option to repair things that go wrong, as well as upgrade their own hardware to keep it relevant as new technologies roll out. On top of being glued together, the new MacBook Pro is virtually non-upgradeable—making it the first MacBook Pro that will be unable to adapt to future advances in memory and storage technology.

Despite its dismal repair score, there’s much to be excited about here beyond the Retina display: new ports, an asymmetrical fan, and a Samsung flash memory SSD. Oh, and the screws are replaceable.
Major chips we found on the logic board:
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M GPU
- Intel Core-i7 3720QM 2.6 GHz processor
- What appears to be an Intel E208B284 Platform Controller Hub
- Hynix H5TC2GB3CFR DDR3L SDRAM
- Intel DSL3510L Thunderbolt controller

The design integration reminds me of a fine German sports car like a Mercedes Benz or BMW. Looks great. Works great. But forget about trying to fix anything yourself !
Price was one reason and there you have another reason to strengthen your decision on not buying one. Apple shouldn’t have done this. So before buying this piece, one must weigh all the costs and benefits !
Thank you for this awesome repair review.
then again , if you can fork out the starting price the repair price cant be a problem for you.As you are clearly financially comfortable.
Yet again Apple has done nothing particularly revolutionary other than find a new way to rip people off. I know I sound cynical, but I can’t help it when Apple tries to sell something with components anyone could find in a PC for considerably less money. I’ve spent in total around $1000 on a PC (including monitor and input devices) I built and can render video, record amazing audio and edit it as well, and edit photos all day long with out a problem. I can also game to my heart’s content.
Sorry, Kevin but you sound like one of those Honda performance kids telling everyone why Corvettes are a rip-off. Sorry, but there’s a reason why Apple products cost more and if you don’t get it that’s fine. I’ll continue to enjoy my maintenance free computing experience. I’ll continue to simply turn on my computer and work and never worry about having to fiddle with some stupid thing for four hours to get it working. I’ll continue to actually do productive things with my time and you can continue to spend hours building budget PC’s and fixing them when they break.
Οr you can see it the other way around. Apple has made a laptop that is very hard to break down, you are covered by a 2 year warranty in most countries and you can upgrade to 3 not very expensively (and very very cheaply if you are a student). So even is something happens, you do not have to pay for it. By no means an Apple fan but I personally like this direction. I commute 4 hours per day, do a lot of work on the road and need a laptop that will not break down easily. It seems that Apple (indeed in a premium price…) can provide that.
And how does this compare to a non-Retina display MBP?
And how does this compare to a non-Retina display MBP?
Buddie: You’ve clearly never owned a PC before.
“It’s critical that consumers have the option to repair things that go wrong, as well as upgrade their own hardware to keep it relevant as new technologies roll out.”
The overwhelming majority of consumers don’t give a damn about any of this stuff. Power users do. Technicians like us do, but these users account for about 2% of the consumer base. iFixIt has a point, but they’re dead wrong about what most consumers care about.
When you’re number one, you can do whatever you want. It’s the test of a company’s actual intentions when market forces essentially no longer apply.
I just got my MPB back from being repaired, my friends have all been having theirs repaired, the track pads break, the logic boards fail, the RAM freaks out, they are dropped, they crash now and then. Every apple “fan” I know has had a massive failure of some kind that has needed serious overhaul or replacement. If they were lucky it was covered by apple care. Yes programs and add ons are applied easily and are often stable but to say, ” I’ll continue to enjoy my maintenance free computing experience” is a total over-inflation of the brands stability.
This is why I will never, ever buy an Apple product.
You can’t replace the battery or upgrade the RAM or hard drive? Wow, that’s some amazing innovation and totally not stepping back in progress at all!!
“Every apple “fan” I know has had a massive failure of some kind that has needed serious overhaul or replacement.”
So, buddie, where’s your “maintenance free computing experience” now, huh? LOL
If you leave the space for self repair, you can’t really get it as light or as thin. This seems like a necessary sacrifice to get the unparalleled thinness, as inconvenient as it is. The reason you pay for a Macbook is for the sexiness, not necessarily for the geekability.
Since Apple has given into utilizing the Intel chipsets if you are that dead set on the operating system etc of a MBP load the MAC OS on a PC its the same hardware but less proprietary and less expensive Plus PC’s have a right click.
Yes, nothing like paying Apple’s high price ram and HD to upgrade this little jewel.
No thanks, I am buying at least 4 of the old ones to have in stock, I need to be able to mod my laptops, if I wanted to be locked down with memory/HD I would buy an iPad or an Air.
Very disappointing release IMO.
Kevin- So go buy a PC Laptop then… nobody’s holding a gun to your head! :-)
Buddie – 1991 called, they want their post back.
@Buddie
Yes, I know *exactly* why Apple products cost what they do.
http://partialobjects.com/2011/06/what-will-be-a-luxury-in-the-future-everything-except-final-cut-pro/
You’re paying for the brand, and for what the brand says about you.
I’ve got a 2008 MBP that went through three batteries before it died for good in 2011 with a logic board failure. Since it wasn’t a video issue, it isn’t covered by the recall. It’s repairable. For a mere $250, the Apple store will get it running again. If my employer hadn’t given me a new one last April, I would have done it already. Gripe all you want or just buy what you prefer. It’s up to you.
If I need to reinstall Windows, I search for and hope that I made the recovery DVD. With the new MacBook, reinstalling means I find a WiFi connection and press Command-R and pull the installation over the net. I don’t have to track down anything.
I haven’t owned a single laptop or desktop computer that didn’t need help from time to time. With Windows, I spent most of my time fixing Windows. Pick your poison.
Buddie, you said this, “Sorry, but there’s a reason why Apple products cost more and if you don’t get it that’s fine.” However, you just arrogantly went on afterwards without even explaining yourself. Please, explain what the reason is for Apple charging an arm and a leg for one of their computers.
It’s not that Apple machines don’t break down. However, one thing that I am surprised nobody talks about is Apple’s customer service. Like Mr. Hansell said, the heavy majority of consumers do not want to fix their own laptop. If it breaks or needs upgrading, they just want it to be made right ASAP, even if it costs them, so they can get back to using the device.
I have owned PCs and Macs, and had multiple failures on both platforms. Apple, though, wins the customer service battle easily. Any time I have had a valid complaint, even if my stuff is out of warranty, they have done all they can to make things right. Apple may tout their products as their greatest strength, but I would say it’s their ability to make the average consumer happy, albeit a bit poorer.
“The design integration reminds me of a fine German sports car like a Mercedes Benz or BMW. Looks great. Works great. But forget about trying to fix anything yourself !”
I can’t speak for Mercedes, but clearly you have never owned a BMW. Having owned and worked on a multitude of cars, BMW is actually one of the better cars to work on.
I just bought an Alienware laptop which is the exact opposite of this machine. Almost all parts are user upgradable. Video Card, Processor, Ram, HDD, wireless card… Not only that, Dell actually has videos on you tube showing you how to take the machine apart.
Sorry, Buddie, but you sound like one of those Apple-can-do-no-wrong fanboys. I’ve built several PCs and have never had issues like you describe. I can switch out parts if I feel the need to upgrade and I have complete control over the functionality of my OS. I had a friend come over seeking software help on his MacBook (gasp! Mac’s do have problems!) and I couldn’t believe the amount of pain you have to go through to edit simple system files. You are locked out of your own OS like a child.
Also, it’s worth mentioning, I had a MacBook years back. Unfortunately, the hardware began to fail (gasp! MORE PROBLEMS!). So I take it to a “genius” who tells me they won’t sell me the parts required to fix it myself. Instead, I need to give them the laptop and agree to exorbitant fees to have a “genius” fix it. If he’s a “genius”, what’s that make every other person walking in the door? A chump.
That is not to say, PCs don’t have hardware/software issues because they do. Fortunately, though, I am not treated like a stupid consumer who isn’t given the means to make the proper repairs when needed. For the purpose most users need computers for, they shouldn’t need a lot of maintenance. If you are on a PC, grab some free Anti-virus software and you should be set. If you are on a Mac, grab your wallet and trust that those “geniuses” behind the counter are who they say they are…
The specs on this are horrendous – you can better on eBay for 10% of the cost on a machine 4-5 years old. Hope some day you Apple cheerleaders will see the light and stop supporting Job’s legacy of slave labor and overpriced products (aka: the story of Manson 2.0).
Apple heads will buy this, PC heads will not. As for the people in the middle… I agree that most do NOT care about upgrading, but I think the number that do is well above 2%.
As for BMWs, what a joke! Those things are maintenance nightmares. Back in ’05 I looked at M3′s & M5′s and finally settled on a CTS-V.
I was able to put 87 in it and I didnt have to take it in every 15,000miles to have stuff readjusted by technicians. (Service I and II) nor did I need a special 10w-60 oil.
When you buy for brand recognition, they make sure they see you often. Almost eveyone I know with a Mac has taken it in to see the “Geniuses”
The other issue is if there’s a hardware issue across the board (let’s say a batch of defective RAM) and it occurs during the warranty period, Apple will have to shoulder much higher repair costs since instead of simply swapping out the RAM their repair teams are going to have a much harder job fixing this stuff.
pconwell – You must be speaking of older model BMW’s. My 2000 M5 had to be the worst pain in the ass car to try to fix or to maintain.
That being said, it was the most fun to drive.
My 2004 M3 is super easy to work on.
I guess the M5 is an anomaly.
Critical that consumers have the option to repair? Disagree. Two words for you: Apple Care.
The first Mac i got was a 2006 (i think) MacBook White, and it still works just fine.
Then i got a MacPro and still works just fine.
Now i need a new laptop because i use to hit the road very often and need to do my work on the go … so i’m seriously considering the new MBP w/ Retina Display.
The only problem i had with an Apple product was with my MB White … the plastic casing was cracked .. and i got it replaced for free, one year after de warranty ended … just because it happened frequently. I bought it in the US, but i’m from Europe … so the changed the keyboard for free too …
I THINH THAT SAYS SOMETHING!!!
I’m one of those VERY satisfied Apple costumers/fans!
Oh … by the way … i wasn’t going to say that Windows is crap … but i changed my mind.
WINDOWS IS CRAP!!!
Even Windows computers are ugly! That or they’re an almost exact copy of a MBP!!!
Or recently a Mac Mini copy …..
Other companies should be prohibited from selling copies ……
You guys are all missing the basic point-
Apple takes advantage of stupid people…. Like most sales these days.
Apple claimed to be better, superior in all things yet they swapped all hardware to x86. Why?
Apple claims they have the best OS around, why when they bought the core out (based on BSD) from another vendor? How is that superior?
I am CIO of a large 500+ organization in the North East and from someone who has managed and worked on both PC’s and Macs, this is such a scam it’s insane. But sadly, just like anything else shiny and pointless, idiots will continue to buy.
(Better my ass…. Take a minute to close something on a new Apple system vs 3 seconds on an older PC…) As they say, ignorance IS bliss….
For the folks that state they can do better for less… I would love to see your 15″ laptop with a display to match, in fact, you would likely have to have a 30″ laptop to match this…. Most of the people purchasing this device don’t want to do what you complain about. And as someone else pointed out, if you don’t like where Apple is going with this device, don’t purchase it.
“Any time I have had a valid complaint, even if my stuff is out of warranty, they have done all they can to make things right. ”
I used to feel that way too, would rave about Apple customer service because in the past, they’d always been good to me. I took an old Macbook in a few years back, missing screws, bottomcase chipping away at the palmrest, needed a new logic board. I was a year and a half out of warranty. The Apple store took one look at it, said “Yep, we have these parts in stock, come back in an hour.” An hour later, I had what was essentially a brand new Macbook – new logic board, new battery, new bottom and top cases – they even transferred the sticker I had stuck over my Apple logo. All for free. I couldn’t believe it. My history with Apple is riddled with experiences like that, it’s why I’ve always bought Apple and why I’ve always encouraged friends and colleagues to buy Apple as well – the customer service was worth the premium.
Recently, the battery in my 13 month old Macbook Pro went flat. Under 250 charge cycles. Literally a month out of warranty, they took one look at it and told me all I could do was buy a new battery and have them install it for around $200 ($120 for the battery, $80+ for labor). That was after I waited for about 45 minutes past my appointment time to see someone.
For me, this is the Apple that I’ve been hearing about for a few years now, but luckily never had the displeasure of dealing with. I really thought the customer service of “Old Apple” was top notch. I’m starting to believe the company has changed, and that’s no longer true.
I’ve purchased and serviced and supported Dell, HP, and Apple over many years. Apple has a higher entry-price-point – hands down. What you get for that premium is (today) largely cosmetics *AND* customer service. To solve a problem thru the wintel suppliers requires many, many dozens of frustrating minutes and frequent hand-offs between disparate departments with little or no hand-off of prior communications with the customer. Apple, on the other hand, will solve my problem in (typically) 1/4 the time – with someone who communicates effectively and without a multitude of handoffs. These opinions based on personally handling many dozens of customer service events over many years time.
I’m not sure about the others but I’m complaining about this because I don’t want other companies to pick up and do the same shoddy business practices as Apple. Don’t get me wrong, their computers may be a god send to people with excess money and those that are too stupid to figure out how to work another OS, but my point here is I don’t want other companies to follow suit just because it’s making Apple money.
Think of it like the complaints about on-disc DLC for Mass Effect 3 and the outcry about the awful 3 colored endings. It’s sort of the same thing here. Company spends millions on advertisements claiming a quality product, millions of people purchase and buy it, but at the end of the day you spent $60 (or in this case $2200) on a product that could have been better made for way less, and that’s still allowing them a profit margin.
I’ve owned Macs since 1995 and the much maligned PowerBook 5300. (rightly so, I suppose) I work on computers as a side business as well. Prior to 2006 all of my business was from PC’s. Now it’s almost entirely from Macs.
My MacBook Pro died after only 2 years of service. That is all too often the case. I’ve repaired many, many MBP’s that die far too early for what we pay for them. When my MBP died I went to my 5300 and it still booted. My 3400 and my Pismo work just fine as did my PowerBook G4.
Apple gives us crap for our money, save for the social status factor.
My next computer will be a Lenovo. If you choose to buy pretty over reliability that’s your choice and people shouldn’t give you grief for it.
Many professionals see the handwriting on the wall and are moving away from Mac.
What is the utility of a fantastic display like the new Retina MBP, but with a hard drive that holds squat? It caters not to the pro but to the poser.
Miguel – Your MBP can run windows, as can many other Mac products. Thus, by your logic, they are “ugly” and “crap”. You are welcome.
Actually, I write software for Windows machines and spend a good percentage of my day coding around Microsoft’s, “features.” I use a MacBook as my personal machine specifically so I don’t have to deal with all that B.S. when I go home. So I think I’m pretty familiar with the difference between a PC and a Mac.
Apple products cost more because they are better designed and have a much higher level of quality assurance. The same reasons a BMW costs more than a Honda. The only difference is, Honda owners don’t go around telling everyone that BMW’s are rip-offs or slamming a superior product for costing more. If they did everyone would think they were being childish.
Which is exactly what you guys look like to me.
The fact is, Windows users dislike Apple because they think all people buying Macs are fan boys and don’t know how to use real computers.
Mac users like Macs for intangible reasons and don’t mind paying the extra $$$ to get them. Their reasons are hard to explain to Windows people who enjoy taking apart their computer on the weekend.
I am fine with Windows and building my own PC but the first time I ever enjoyed using a laptop (always been a desktop guy) it was a Mac. So I bought one. And I paid a premium to get it.
Pick the one you like and quit complaining that everything Apple builds is a rip off or that all Windows boxes are trash. Nobody cares.
Buddie, your analogy is valid in some cases but not all. You cannot generalize that all PC’s are this, or all Mac’s are that.
Is my crappy win 7 netbook not designed as well as a MBP? Indeed.
But you essentially are saying that mac book pros are the best laptops ever made, and that is an opinion, not an objective statement. For example, if you want a high powered gaming rig as a laptop, wouldn’t you think this would be a good choice?
http://www.falcon-nw.com/laptops/drx
Of course that is probably not fitting to your needs, but that is just to prove a point that its what matters to you, which doesn’t apply to everyone.
The MBP is a great laptop, that is for sure, but what you may find to be the “best” may not be the best for others.
So while all these fanbois are needlessly bashing you, just becareful with your generalizations, because they are your opinions and do not apply for everyone/everything.
Roger, I can’t find anywhere in my post where I said that MacBooks were the, “best.” In fact, I did not use the word, “best” at all in either of my posts.
That Falcon laptop looks fantastic. It’s also a $4,000 machine. The same people who think the MacBook is a rip-off will probably feel the same way about the Falcon.
In other news, the new 55″ LG Flat Panel Television is the least repairable flat panel television ever released…
Why is it always necessary to swap components on an expensive piece of electronics again?
The car analogy is not really applicable seeing as how luxury cars require much more routine maintenance than your average economy car such as a Honda . Personally I don’t really care what computer/OS anyone else prefers , to each their own .
“iFixIt has a point, but they’re dead wrong about what most consumers care about.”
You’ve hit the nail on the head.
I have a job. It’s a hard job. It’s a good job. It is a fairly-paid job and it’s also technical. You know what my job is not?
Computer or software engineer.
I remember being in the field having to repair my own Dell. It was about 20% cheaper than a Mac–MAYBE 25% cheaper, with all the same features. Except reliability. I spent about 25% of my time working as a computer engineer. Hardware, software, you name it. I had to code, I had to repair, I had to take apart. All that time was lost productivity for my real job.
Now that I’m working on my own, I have a Mac. I just don’t have time for that crap.
Both of my Macs worked perfectly until my kids spilled water on them (coffee on one, water on the other). The first worked okay after the spill but had keyboard issues. I replaced the computer and my spouse at the time used it since–and I am not making this up–in spite of being three years older and having a crap keyboard, it still worked better than his HP. I am now typing on a replacement keyboard for the second Mac that had liquid damage. It is working perfectly, save battery (water damage) and keyboard, in spite of three years of use on three continents and daily travel.
Don’t tell me PCs work like that. I know they don’t. I’ve had them for work.
“The car analogy is not really applicable seeing as how luxury cars require much more routine maintenance than your average economy car such as a Honda .”
That’s true–but even more reason to buy a Mac if you are a professional but not a professional computer engineer. You need something that works and that will not break down. Chances are you can get a tax deduction or reimbursement for repair costs. And it works better.
Still, there is nothing like a Mercedes ride. I remember when my now-ex-spouse bought a 1980s Mercedes. We thought it would be our junker, and our much newer Corolla would be our “nice” car.
The 80s Mercedes had more features and better comfort and more power than the Corolla. The ride, oh my god the ride. Frankly, if I hadn’t ridden in that car I would have thought it was just for show. Now I know.
I can’t afford the gas for a Benz. But a nice computer, which is necessary for my work, I can afford.
You can’t compare a sub-$1000 PC made by a major OEM like Dell to a high-end boutique laptop like a Macbook Pro and then go on to claim that PCs are inherently inferior. That’s not how money works. Quality PC hardware lasts, and Windows 7 works very well for most purposes. The hardware inside a Mac is no better than the hardware you can put in a PC.
I just got a new Thinkpad and the build quality is not nearly as good as my friends MBP. I think it’s a bit disingenuous to suggest that the entire cost difference is the brand name, though that is definitely part of it.
I’m starting to think Apple is a ripoff.
No, wait… I thought that years ago.
Reading through these comments was quite interesting. The Apple fan boys claiming PC guys are wrong, and the PC guys calling fault for Apple making a product that is essentially non-repairable.
That being said, I’m going to stick with my PC. I know people complain about “spending 4 hours to get it working” but I personally am not an idiot, so have never had that problem. If you say it takes you four hours to get a PC working, then please, do not argue that you are smart. When it comes to computers you are NOT smart if it took you that long unless you are fixing a computer that does not belong to you.
Now that my personal opinion is out of the way. This product is poorly designed, and Apple will get away with it because there are enough people out there blind enough to buy it. What makes it even worse is most of the people who do buy it will do so without ever knowing what they are getting into in case of a break that isn’t covered by the warranty. There are enough people out there who are not tech savvy that rely on Apple to make their products because of their customer service, repair teams, and just the easy to use software.
I don’t know about you guys, but I’m not one of those people who isn’t tech savvy, can’t fix or upgrade my own computer, and I don’t need overly simplified software at the expense of customization. So once again, I’ll stick with my PC and you can keep you Apple, because at the end of the day I’m not going to convince ANYONE to change their ways, no matter what my opinion is.
“Don’t tell me PCs work like that. I know they don’t. I’ve had them for work.”
Ummm, Liliboo, you are comparing an expensive personal laptop that is designed specifically to not crash, but have less customization. With less customization problems are easier to avoid because hell, there are less possible combinations to predict. Another thing, you compare a “work laptop” to a Macbook. What laptop model were you using? Could we get some specs? If you were using a piece of crap laptop and now have a macbook pro no wonder you became a card carrying member of the Apple Fan Boy Club. If you were using a high end, 2-3k PC laptop, customized specifically for your needs you would have had a lot less problems to deal with. Yes, you MIGHT have had more than with your precious Mac, but a hell of a lot less problems.
Also, I would like to know what you had to “code” to fix your laptop on the go? Because if you arn’t a software or hardware engineer how the hell did you “code” something to fix your laptop! LOL
@Buddie Your comment shows that you are either uninformed, or straight up too much of an Apple fanboy to admit that your precious company messed up. Building a custom PC actually alleviates most of the problems of buying one off the shelf if you know what you’re doing, and do it right the first time. My last build was completed about a year and half ago, and since I started using it I’ve had ONE unexpected BSOD. I think one unexpected total system crash in a year and half is pretty ‘Hassle free’
@Anthony Maw: As someone who has seen lots of people fix their BMW, Mercedes or Audis, I have to say that the new MBP is probably harder to fix ;)
I work on both platfomrs, I also have to deal with 20+ labs of both platfomrs and what I can tell from experience is that both are good but apple is way to expensive to buy and maintain. Don’t tell me macs dont fail or break, they do and very often. The difference is really this: when you own a mac, it is yours only and no one else uses it, a pc is usually a family including the dog’s computer. Also the mistake comes from comparing a 2k mac with a 500 pc, try to get high end good reliable brand pc nd then you have reliability, stbility and tons mor power for the same money, on the pc. However, it is more difficult to choose what you should buy according to your needs, either be power user or be helped by one to choose what is right for you, or buy a mac paying he premium, but is unpack it and use it. I am extremely happy with high end dell and lenovo laptops, which for the price compare to a mac but with components and power that a mac user could only dream of, i mean 32 gb ram, raid hard drives, nvidia quadro graphics. Bigger and heavier yes, but i dont write poetry, i need horsepower for rendering and animating, on the go, and dont loose those good paying clients. For over 5 years, none of my laptops have had even one issue. Only once when my son dropped the dell 6600, i had to call service, and they where, at my office, the next day, switched the hard drive for a new one, no question asked, cost = 0. Now that is what i call service.
Should i need a laptop only for word or excel, i would consider getting a macbook air for the portability and status, but i am serious about power and speed so i cant do it. And by the way, none of my computers is almost ever turned off, they are always either rendering or calculating simulations, so yes, they get kicked the crap out of them 24/7.
To simplify, spend the same on well thought equipment, and always know what is installed, and used, and by who.
oh and for the guy who said to reinstall w7 you need to find the dvd and he does it over wifi, comon, good laptops come partitioned so you need nothing to reinstall the whole system, no media, no wifi, no internet required.
I have always had trouble understanding the Mac v PC war, mostly because of my bottomless hatred for macs, and until recently the only reason I could come up with that no one could argue with was that the button to close windows on a mac is on the “wrong” side. Do macs cost too much? Yes. But most mac users will have a solid enough defense for that price. Beyond that, the hardware is often on par with a pc, but I think i have pinned down the explanation for this hatred, especially on the pro. There are those of us, even if the computer never konks out on us, that subconsciously DEMAND the right to tear apart their property and see what is inside. Mac users i assume only process their being locked out of their own device to “I could break something in there”, while PC users, like me anyway, think ” This is like buying a house but half the doors, which you may or may not ever use even if they were open, are locked by the previous owner.” For me anyway, that is reason so many people rage against users of the “wrong” system, and why no on will win anyone else over in an argument, because its a difference between those who can ignore the locks and those who can’t. The hatred I harbor for macs may be unreasonable, but I understand it now.
why repair, when you can buy a new one?
why make it easy to repair when you have radical fanboys, who pay for anything you make, no matter how it is?
I keep seeing all these people saying in response to the tear down of this MacBook Pro with Retina Display things like “I’ve built PCs that are just as powerful/great/use the same parts, blah, blah, blah.” OK, wisenheimers, tell me:
1. Do you build notebook PCs from the ground up? And if so, how thin and light are these allegedly identical wonders? Let’s see photos.
If they are desktops, you’re comparing Apples with anvils. If you don’t understand the need for MAJOR portability, then you don’t understand the point of computers that are this portable.
2. Oh, you’ve used all of the same parts found in this notebook, huh? Where have you procured Retina Displays?
Also, who works on their laptop/notebook beyond the basics, REALLY? I know, techs do, but I av better ways to spend my time. And the repairs are FREE on Apple products WITHOUT AppleCare (note, it’s one word, not two) for the first year.
Good luck repairing your non-Apple ultrabook on your own or from the manufacturer cheaply and with reasonable ease.
And to the silly person who commented here that “you can right click on PCs”, it just shows how ignorant you are. You’ve been able to right click in OS X for YEARS.
Next comment…
At the end of the day Apple has become a luxury brand, and are priced as such. All you PC people whining about macs being overpriced probably also claim LV products to be overpriced. LV wallets and bags sell like hotcakes in their stores, many of those people who buy these luxurious items are not stupid or dumb, but rather affluent professionals who want to indulge in something nice. This new MBP’s retina display and its extremely thin profile embody this sense of indulgence in the computing world, and to that end it serves its purpose. Some people don’t want the ultra bulky, ugly, but superpowerful gaming laptop. Some people don’t want the flimsy feeling of the cheap, but possibly more powerful than the MBP, laptop. Some people just want the solid and well constructed physical feeling of a MBP. Do Macs have problems, yep, but so do PCs. Do Macs break, yep, but so do PCs. Can you repair this make yourself, nope, but the people who buy this Mac don’t care to fix this themselves.
Who cares if you cannot replace half of the **** in there, just max the ram for 200 extra and your set lol ….. plus the resolution is the major selling point so relax.
This whole thing is insane. Why not use what you like?
I have both a 2008 White Unibody Macbook (that I threw extra ram and an SSD into when the hard drive started to die) and a 2 year old gaming tower running windows 7 that I built myself.
For the most part, I use the macbook unless I want to do a bit of gaming. I know how to use both systems and keep my computers clean and working properly. I haven’t had kernel panics or BSOD issues in the last 9 months with either.
I also own an iPad 2 and a Samsung Galaxy Nexus; I’ll use what I like and what makes me happy and what I personally prefer. I don’t see switching away from my mac any time soon.
Why?
Because I like it. I enjoy the way that the machine feels and looks. I enjoy how responsive the track pad is (I know that there are some good ones out there, but nothing that feels as good to me as the one on my macbook). I like the OS on my macbook. As a musician, the programs that are available to me from the get-go are better than 90% of all the various recording programs available on any other OS. It seems that there is some hatred towards cleanliness and simplicity. I prefer the UIs that are available for many of the programs that are mac-specific. However, gaming on a mac blows. It’s getting better very slowly, but it still blows.
I don’t like fanboys. I don’t like the way that some people idolize a tool or a piece of machinery either. However, I haven’t had the terrible experiences that others have had here. I think that if my computer kept shitting itself every chance it got, I’d likely hate it too and blame the company. However, that hasn’t been my experience.
If you don’t like Apple or the Macbook pro, fine. Don’t use it. However, don’t call me an ignorant asshole just because I happen to prefer a different machine than you do.
I need that retina display for…uhhh.. what do I need it for again? Oh yeah! E-mail, facebook and youtube!
@madcows: You don’t seem to understand the term “luxury”. It isn’t about utility or need.
Like MacBook Air
That’s really disappointing! You’d think for $2200, you’d be able to have the ability to future proof your laptop! Thankfully Apple has good customer service that usually will help you get your laptop repaired, but still, very upsetting.
app-tology
@kevin
For people who have no business being on the internets, any computer is a luxury. But seriously, youtube videos and lolcats would look fantastic on that screen. I can also hang out at starbucks and hope that someone will think I’m cool. I’ll wear my good shoes too.
@Buddie I agree with most everything you’ve said, although to say the average BMW lasts longer, is more reliable or maintenance free than the average Honda is laughable, so please find an analogy you’re more familiar with in the future.
That said, I agree with most here, that the big thing you’re paying for is a brilliant screen. Apple makes very nice computers but at a price I’m not willing to part with. It’s also a shame you can’t reinvigorate it 2 yr down the road with a fresh battery and larger/quicker SSD.
Also, their track pads do majorly kick butt.
Several thoughts after reading through the posts and the article.
1) Apple has pushed the bar higher and this will benefit us all, even those of us that won’t necessarily buy Apple.
2) Have any of you ever tried to work on one of those fancy Mac servers? They are a nightmare to get around in if you have to pull out the motherboard.
3) Apple has no lock on reliability. My sister swears by her Macbook. Oddly, she bought her first MB at the same time I bought my IBM T43p – September 2005. I am typing this on my IBM which is still all original. Meanwhile, she has had to upgrade twice because of complete failures of her MB motherboard.
So, Apples are things of beauty, but they are not invincible or necessarily desirable unless you like the look.
imho Apple have done this on purpose – the idea is to turn computers into household appliances. The only problem I see with their products is that the prices are too high. Otherwise, truth be told, how many people that buy laptops actually upgrade them? Such people do exist but I’m pretty sure they are a minority. Apple targets well-off dummies.
Ok, my 2c: I’ve dealt with PC’s since ms-dos 5. Every single desktop I ever had is custom built for my needs, and I own 4 laptops. 3 of those are Acer, one is asus eeepc. I am well aware that even with W7 you can get the occational BSOD, but I’ve had none in 2012. And when I do, it’s usually because I actually do stuff with computers. The laptops have all worked 100%, even the dreaded acers. One acer had leftside USB’s dead one morning and I felt that the keyboard needed a bit too hard tapping for it respond. So I call Acer support. DHL comes the very same day to pick my laptop and brings it back after 6 working days. They changed virtually everything in there for brandnew parts, making it essentially a brandnew laptop. That I call customer care.
I make music using actual instruments. I record and edit semi-professional videos including musicvideos. I do graphics using vectors and bitmap. I encode videos from one format to another. In other words: I do a lot of stuff that requires bruteforce from the processor, lot’s of fast RAM and very, very much harddrivespace. So I guess MBP is out for me. “So go get a mac desktop” some one says. No. I dont get paid to do my work on an overprices mac, I get paid to do stuff flexibily with a scalable computer without spending thousands of $ for no other reason that to brag about it.
So why do I hate Apple? Shockingly, I dont. I am happily here with my affordable-yet-powerful system running W7, watching how a company exploits the dumb and the lazy. I run my own company, and I am admittingly jealous that the bottomline of Apple is so good. Hell, I’d love to sell overpriced stuff too, and make countless millions. Kudos for them, but I’m sticking to PC’s. The one thing I hate? The AppleFans, who I hereby as my personal opinion equate to religious nuts. They go around the world praising that Apple is the best, the only, the absolute. They thereby elevate themselves to a plane where, as history shows, bad things start to happen. Biggest cause of wars and deaths in the history of man? Religion.
So, anyway, rambling aside. So they made a laptop that is not upgradable. So what. So they are charging over $2000 for it. So what. I’m sure there are people out there who have the luxury of being financially secure enough to buy their piece of heaven. Just dont come shove it down my throat. I like beer and cigarettes, but you dont see me praising that distorted reality is the way to go.
ps. Practical thing I discovered when trying out a friends 1 year old MBP. Start the musicprogram. Ok then I’ll just connect my usb-pianoboard, my usb-guitareffect/amplifier and my usb-mixer… wait, what?
I bought my laptop which had a better specification than the leading macbook pro at the time for a fraction of the cost & it would be stupid to suggest the product from ASUS was any less reliable, I have had no problems with it, it’s easily to upgrade & a great quality.
The fact is the main reason Mac charge so much is because they can, you want OSX? Then you’re tied to Apple for the most part. The fact is that there not functionally superior to Samsung or ASUS equivalent machines.
Of course the Mac fan boy is named “Buddie”, Anyone who prefers Mac over PC or has had “ton of trouble with PCs” must have 0 computer knowledge. Ill enjoy why 1000.00$ custom build PC that is more powerful than a 2500.00$ Mac.
What really cracks me up are all the budget PC fanboys calling me a fanboy. If you were slamming Tag watches for being more expensive than G-Shock people would laugh at you for acting like a child. Yet, somehow when the better designed, more expensive, metal cased product is a MacBook it turns into a matter of pride. I think the thing that upsets you most if that I’m right.
“making it the first MacBook Pro that will be unable to adapt to future advances in memory and storage technology.” What a silly statement! of course it can adapt to future advances in technology. You take it to the Genius Bar. The Genius quotes a huge price and long lead time. The Genius then offers to sell you a new one. You buy. See? You now have the newly advanced technology!
ok guys, I have been in the IT industry for at least 20 years I have had Windows PCs Linux and Mac Computers. The only and I repeat only reliable computer that I have ever owned is an apple computer.
I have a customer of mine who has had an apple computer for yes get this 9 years. How many of you out there can say the same about your Windows PC?
Last year I seriously considered buying another windows laptop (the last one I gave to my wife as I could not stand working on the laptop, in case you are asking it was a Toshiba )
I went to several stores in Paris and looked online for weeks but I was unable to find a 15″ laptop with a decent resolution, they all had the same rubbish resolution as each other and the design and build ranged from poor to criminal, I returned one evening after looking around and I had never felt so depressed in my life. I just could not believe that the main stream manufacturers could build something so bad and get away with it, with their plastic cheep bendable keyboard and poor viewing angles.
Apple have delivered the retina pc which I have ordered online, the same night it was released why? simple because they gave me what I was looking for a light weight thin computer with an awesome display and processing power that will last me for many years.
As for apples inflated memory prices. on this occasion I have to disagree for once Apple’s prices were comparable to the market prices for the type of memory that they are offering, so I am happy to go with 16GB of memory.
Upgrading laptop? very low on my list of priorities. I just want a computer that I can rely on and each time the only manufacturer that delivers is Apple.
Don’t get me wrong it took several months before I bought my first Apple computer and that is the best decision I have ever made. I am not going to slate windows users as I really don’t care, but for me its the best choice in the world of IT.
Seriously, the only PC laptop that I have ever seen and used that I felt was marginally comparable to the build quality, by that I mean aesthetics and physical feel, of a MBP is the samsung series 9 ultrabook. I have never seen a PC laptop with an IPS panel monitor ever. The series 9 is close to the same dimensions as the new RDMBP. Comparing the two base configurations of the laptops, we see that the RDMBP has an ~$800 premium to it. The RDMBP has an IPS lcd panel that is just simply more expensive than normal lcd panels. RDMBP is more powerful with a 2.3Ghz i7 to the series 9′s 1.7Ghz i5. The RDMBP has double the storage capacity. The RDMBP has 2 GPUs, in a sense. The series 9 laptop is made from some aluminum and some its and bits of plastic. The RDMBP is made of the same, but uses much more aluminum. A better processor, a GPU, a higher quality display, and the use of more aluminum, does that amount to $800? maybe, maybe not. The RDMBP is technically better than the series 9. The RDMBP is, subjectively, more aesthetically appealing than the series 9 and this is a big selling point for all apple products, aesthetics. People need to step away for the old notion that overall utility is the most important thing for a computer product. This is no longer the case for most consumers who are not power users. I mean even power users want something that looks nice, they just tolerate more ugly if it means more power. I mean, all things considered, the RDMBP isn’t really a MBP. Its a slightly thicker macbook air on steroids.
The “unrepairable” Mac brings back memories of Packard Bell pop-rivited motherboards. But remember that Apple products disposable. Like diapers.
I am glad my wife’s father bought his pro before this mistake came out. I have a MBP, a MB, a Mini, and two 2 G5 PowerMacs (not to mention the working G4s and G3s in my closet.) So I don’t think I can be accused of being anti-mac. I have had more problems with the Intel macs than I have ever had with three times the number of PPC systems. Replaces logic boards, just added a 500GB hdd to my wife’s MB along with a memory upgrade. Now Apple seems to be making the disposable system. When something breaks, don’t replace something small, replace something big, bigger or biggest. If Apple keeps on this trend, then it is long past time for 3rd party Mac compats, or to leave Mac once my current systems die.
Mac became not an option for me when the batteries became nonreplacable.. All three macbooks we’ve got have required battery replacements and the apple ones are stupid expensive.
Ordinary users may not expand hard drive and memory themselves but they’ll go to a friendly geek to do it, and we can usually do it as they watch. With this new box you have to send it to apple for 2 weeks (why is it always 2 weeks?) & pay a huge premium for ‘apple branded’ memory – which means it’ll basically not happen… the average person can’t afford to lose a working laptop for that long.
That’s assuming they live near an apple store – few people do (35 apple stores in the UK serve 80 million people). If they don’t they’re hosed.
This might be a better anlogy than the BMW one:

Fanbois will eventually get run over by the Macbook Pros design limitations and lack of upgradeablity.
Non-Fanbois will make the correct decision and get the hell out of the way.
I own PC’s and Apple kit (1 very high-end gaming PC, 1 work PC, PC laptop, Apple iMac, iPad3, 2 iPhones, iPods etc). Also own several Android devices. I write mostly mobile apps, and also embedded firmware for industrial applications. I will pay a premium happily if I think I’m still getting value for money.
However, the new Macbook Pro Retina is certainly not good value. The ONLY reason Apple have soldered RAM onto the board, and used a proprietary SSD design is to force buyers to pay 4-5 times the price of standard parts of exactly the same quality. The fact they’ve glued and welded everything together also makes this incredibly environmentally unfriendly as so much has to be thrown away for even small fixes, and the mixture of fused materials means it’s hard/impossible to recycle.
So it’s clear that Apple have no regard for the environment, see their customers are brainless cash-cows that they can milk as much as they like, and are pushing a backward philosophy based on closed, locked down systems and killing competition. The company are scum.
Obviously fanbois and trolls will try to defend this disgusting company even if the CEO admitted to punching babies in the face for a hobby. But I for one will NEVER buy another Apple product (and I’d bet I’ve spent a lot more money over the years on Apple gear than the average consumer/fanboi). I hope many others wake up and do the same.
And to the fanbois claiming they need to spend hours fixing PCs and reinstalling etc – you know this is not 1999 any more right? PCs have been easily as stable as OSX for many years. And before that Windows 95/2000 etc was lightyears ahead of OS9 – I had to use OS9, and it was absolute crap. No memory management, “cooperative multitasking”, bugs, crashes. Please.
I’m done with Apple.
I like macs but don’t get me wrong i like pcs too.
I had an iMac 21 inch. It was slow so i built myself a gaming comp for 1k. I got tired of it, and now i don’t even play games anymore apart from xbox/sc2 and the damn thing sounds like a jet.
Now i want a mbp to get back to the beautiful OSX :( so i’ll get a 15 inch probably but not retina.
It doesn’t matter what you get if it suits your purposes and makes you happy. If you get off flexing your eguns with your dual gpu laptop thats fine and noone should bother you. If someone else has an orgasm everytime they rub their hand on the
mbps aluminum case and prefers OSX (like me) they can choose apple and no one should give 2 sh!ts.
since people love pissing each other off and creating conflict fanbois from apple are gonna bash peecees and vice versa.
Think of it like a religious war. Christianity vs Islam vs Fill in the blank. Both work for different people and suit people just fine. I personally love watching ppl bash each other but this is how it works XD
Comparing a pc laptop to the retina mbp is like comparing a ti-83 calculator to an iphone. You just enjoy yourself and play technician with your pos pc laptop. Apple fanboys obviously are missing out ;)
This is about taking away American jobs.
I have a independent Mac repair business since 1998.
Lets say the MacBook Pro craps out 4 years down the road you will have to buy a new one. You can no longer fix it for a reasonable price and recoup some of your costs.
That’s because the little macs guys will no longer be around to help you.
Apples goal is to control all the hardware and move everything to the cloud and control everything that cost money.
I’m sorry but I have been a Apple fan through and through but the writing is on the wall.
Unless people boycott these products and communicate their wishes to Apple this WILL become your reality.
Apple now SUCKS!
I don’t need to upgrade, and I don’t want to ever work on it . If it breaks I’ll hand Apple the one I have- and just as they would with an iPod or iPhone, they’ll hand me a replacement.
Simple, efficient, reliable, polite and I go back to work. These devices are not toys to play with, they are tools to be used.
Thing that ppl dont know (and apple fans will not get) that even if it comes with warranty, It will be voided for any little thing that happens to it since it WILL NOT COVER ANYTHING THAT COMES ON IT. Not only that but it uses a lithium polymer battery, so if it shorts out for any small reason the mac book will explode and you will have to deal with medical injuries.
So have fun with your MacGrenade!!! >:{D
I’ve been a dedicated Mac user all of my life. I also build PC’s. I honestly believe that Apple is the singular best brand of computer. Why? Because it just works. You don’t just pay a premium for the looks, or the OS, you pay for the guarantee. I can pull my 14-yr old iMac out of the closet, and it will boot just as fast as it did in 1998. Not to say I’ve not had problems, but every one was due to user error (messing with the RAM on a powermac, spilling liquid on the keyboard of a Macbook, etc.). Also, I know that some models of iBooks were notoriously hard to disassemble. But every PowerMac I’ve owned was the easiest to upgrade, just pull the lever on the side and it folds flat, so you don’t have to reach in. Also, besides the Air and the Retina, recent Macbooks have been a piece of cake to access, much easier than any PC laptop, remove 10 screws and you have access to the logic board, RAM, batteries, HDD, etc. right off the bat. On a computer that’s less than 3/4 in thick.
I have a gaming desktop (high end cpu, gpu, mobo, psu, etc.), but I actually game more on my Macbook. Sure, it can’t run Skyrim very well, but I’ve logged hundreds of hours on portal and team fortress 2, etc. They may not have the best graphics, but they are fun to play.
Also, one more note. My Macbook has 3+ hours of battery life on it, after 3 years of at least 1 full charge cycle a day. I have an HP tablet with an extended battery for school. Within 2 years of lighter usage, the external battery (which should have given me 3+ hrs, realistically) was dead, and the internal battery (also should be 3 hrs), gives my just over 100min of light usage.
Say what you want, but you get what you pay for.
i wouldnt mind buyin a throw away locked down laptop for $400 if its under warranty. but $2300 no way plus apple care plus accidental insurance for when you spill something on it and the Genius tells you its not covered. wake up guys this is all about reducing manufacturing costs not advancing technology. Yes the screen is great but apple do not make this and in six months all high end lap tops will have this feature. How thin do you need it to be its still 15 inches by 9 or 10 inches. I will stick to Lenovo rugged shock protected and a key board that I can replace after a spill without dismantling the whole machine and has a built in spill tray and drain holes to protect the contents.
I use a 2010 MBP…. and all these people saying PC’s are unreliable need to stop talking.
I am not a computer engineer or even an expert on PC’s. I have had a PC since 2008 and the only problem it has ever had is on very rare occasions it will freeze. My MBP freezes too on rare occasions. People just don’t know how to take care of their things is the issue. Hardware failures I can understand but what i don’t get is what people do to their computers that they keep getting errors like seriously wtf do you guys do?
Apple fanboy… comparing an IMac to a Desktop PC is like comparing a tricycle to a F-16. Enjoy your POS IMac wait i will add in a MBP with retina display to that also. Let me know when you can play Battlefield 3 on a mac until then enjoy surfing facebook with your retina display and doing graphic design or special effects / film editing. Sounds awesome BRO.
Great…I just got my ACMT certification and now there is a SPECIAL CLASS AND CERTIFICATION for this model?!
Gawd…I loathe Apple…
(um, today…I’m sure I’ll be a fanboy again tomorrow!)
Don Montalvo, TX
The differences may best be explained in a first date scenario:
Mac boys: would compliment her on her style and dress.
PC boys: would ask her what underwear she’s wearing.
Debate closed.
I was really looking forward to the new MacBook Pro. I’m using an old 13″ and decided to wait on a replacement until this new model came out. Now I’m thinking I would have been better off with the old style.
Why, oh why, Apple do you continue to crap your proprietary anti-computer-lover crap down our throats! I LOVE apple computers, yet I HATE the fact that I can no longer have two HDD’s in my MBP, and can’t upgrade squat a year from now, two years from now, etc… This is a real disappointment from APPLE. I Just may find myself switching back to a $hitty PC now… Thanks Apple. Thanks a lot for continuously ruining everything for me. You never cease to fail us.
Ah, hilarity ensues when you find a bunch of pc fanboys bashing on Apple for the newest hotness. BTW I use a pc for gaming, macbook pro for work. It’s easier to develop web apps on a system that resembles linux. Just fire up the terminal and type away.
I must say this is very cheap laptop only $2200 dollars, easily affordable for any student. And once you buy this laptop you will never need a purchase another one because everyone has said Apple makes the high quality equipment that never fails and if it fails it is NOT THEIR EQUIPMENT but USER ERROR. That is what I have learned in the past 5 -6 odd years. If you are a student who can afford to pay 6.8% interest on your 50k for 4-year education this laptop is a worth while $2200 investment. I will not breakdown for those four years that is a fact and if it does than you are not using the equipment for its intended purpose, its a laptop not a car, so has to be replaced every 3-4 years. Apple is a best at what it does, innovations and manufacturing, they want you to be happy with your products so that you come back in 2-4 years to buy the same products. That is how capitalism works, if you dont like it move to another country, god.
Man you apple brasher should go and calculate how much you spent last 5 years on those god awful PCs, compare it with the cost Macs for last five years you would be surprised how you would have saved in money, time, and head ache.
I never bash Apple’s equipment. I bash Apple users. They argue that you have to work and troubleshoot pc’s for hours and that they can just turn the Mac on and it works. I’ve been in the IT industry for many years and it’s always some tard that breaks their computer or can’t figure something out that ends up buying a Mac. You know who you are. At work you call the helpdesk multiple times a day. It’s always the PC’s fault. Never the tool touching the keyboard. Funny, I don’t have any issues with my own PC. I turn it on and it works. I have the ability to install Winblows, Linux or BSD. Oh, and I spend a quarter of the money for the same components. If I could write this in crayon so it would be “Apple Easy” to read I would.
this is so funny reading your comments is like watching two babies cry im not a real fan of any of these machines but will never buy a machine just because it has a better display and further more i would never buy a computer i can not fix or even upgrade that’s a pile of crap all apple products are crap they charge 4 times the price you can not fix it yourself and never in its life be upgrade-able the only reason apple is doing well cause they make a product then go out and buy every single piece needed to make it so even if a company wanted to make something similar they cant i’ll stick to my dell ive had for the last 7 years and has only gone thru one hd because i dropped it i like to see what happens when this laptop falls from 5 feet i bet its like every other apple product it will smash and never work again you can go ahead and buy overpriced outdated harware all you want and by the way i have some i-icecubes i can see you
This new MacBook “Pro” is anything but pro. I used to admire Apple products, back when they were many moons ahead of PCs in every possible measurement (1980s and early 90s). It was the only platform out there for serious MIDI work and graphics work, which is what I got my first one for back then. Since then, Windows has slowly and successfully copied most of the important good features of Mac OS. Many of my music and graphics apps have since been ported to windows (MOTU Digital Performer, Kyma X). The Mac hardware itself is going downhill fast. The PC makers continue make painfully unattractive boxes, but importantly, the PC boxes are not going downhill in quality. This new retina mac is just cheaply manufactured, throw-away consumer level junk, at an absorbent price. Boooo, shame on Apple. I do own Apple stock and if the next lineup is as crappy as this one, I’m selling off for good. All good things come to and end, such is the way life works.
….Problem is, if I don’t like the new Mac hardware, never was fond of OSX, still don’t like ugly PCs, and copycat systems (WIndows) leave a bad taste in my mouth.. there’s nothing else. We need something new to get excited about.
None of the Mac laptops and most PC laptops can survive the spill of a cup of coffee directly on the keyboard. But the Lenovo T500 laptop can. It has drain holes. You still have to clean up the desk.
Why would you want to take it apart? Just order the 16Gb RAM and you’ll be set for years. I’ve been using Apples for years. They never break down and are used every day of the week. Just my 2 cents.
I truly don’t get it, why all this hostility towards Apple and the MBP lineup. I used to have IBM Laptops (T20, T21, T40 and T61), until six years back when when I ordered blind my (Lenovo) T61. wanna now about a crappy and bad constructed piece of hardware ? ;) I changed for my first MacBook Pro back then and till today I only had Macs never looked back. I don’t find them troublesome or bad constructed I now have a new retina MBP and I feel this as my best MBP ever :)
Cheers to you all.
Carlos
@yoohoojones “I just bought an Alienware laptop which is the exact opposite of this machine. Almost all parts are user upgradable. Video Card, Processor, Ram, HDD, wireless card… Not only that, Dell actually has videos on you tube showing you how to take the machine apart.”
Just as an fyi, customization doesn’t always mean better. i have a late 2011 MBP 15″ with a 2.2 intel i7 4 gb of RAM and a AMD 6770 card. i game with my fiend who owns a 4 thousand dollar gaming computer and 1 hour into gaming on DIABLO 3 (not even a powerful game by any standards, i.e. it requires 1 GB of RAM) he computer starts getting graphic lags and I’m good for the next 5 hours. he had to prop his computer up to get the lag to go away.
I bought an intel MacBook pro December 2009 for almost $4000. It’s a core 2duo. I want to upgrade the processor to an i7. I believe this is very possible and would appreciate any help I could get. I live in Washington dc and don’t mind traveling to someone to aid in this project; don’t mind experimenting. Right now I can’t even get $1000 for my laptop. This is ridiculous. Pls help me!
Mactards would buy even a turd with Apple logo on it.
I love my MacBook Pro. This is a 2010 model. This one has been a dream. I have Ubuntu, Windows 7, and Mountain Lion as the operating software. This computer is how I want my computer to work. However, this is not my first Mac. I bought the original MacBook, and it was a nightmare. The case fell apart, it overheated the RAM on several occasions, and eventually just quit working. Apple is usually pretty good with service, but they do break, and when they do, it’s usually expensive. As far as spending 1800 on a laptop in this day and age of computing…you’d have to be a moron. Wow, you have a retina display, can any of the movies created in that high a resolution be accurately displayed on a TV, of course not. This is nothing more than a gimmick to get people with more money than brains to buy a computer.
In all those comments from 6-13 on, I see one critical comment missing.
What about the reliability of a Windows OS as compared to a Unix language OS.
Is not the Unix a much more stable language and more easily fixed than the windows language?
I understand and have experienced it to be so.
